How to Stop Water Pooling on Garden Furniture Covers

Garden furniture covers are designed to protect your outdoor furniture from rain, dirt, leaves and the weather in general.

But even a good waterproof cover needs to be fitted and arranged properly. One of the most common problems people have is water pooling on top of the cover, especially after heavy rain.

The best way to stop this problem is to make sure the cover slopes, so rainwater can run off rather than sit in one place. You can do this by raising the centre of the cover slightly, securing the base properly, and avoiding flat areas where water can collect. This is particularly important around sewn seams, as standing water puts extra pressure on the cover over time.

At Bags 4 Everything, we make outdoor garden furniture covers in our factory in Ossett, West Yorkshire. Our covers are made from waterproof and breathable polyester material and come with pull cord around the base to help secure the cover in place.

We also offer made-to-measure covers for customers who need a cover for a specific size, shape or item.

Why are sewn seams important?

Sewn seams are a normal part of many garden furniture covers, especially when they are made to fit larger or more awkward items. However, it is always best to avoid letting water sit directly over the seams for long periods.

Standing water adds weight and pressure; it can also increase wear over time. By arranging your garden furniture cover so rainwater runs off, you help protect both the furniture underneath and the cover itself.

This is why we always recommend setting the cover up so it has a natural fall. It is a small step, but it can make a big difference to the life and performance of your cover.

Should outdoor furniture covers be tight or loose?

A garden furniture cover should fit well, but it should not be pulled so tightly that the fabric is under constant strain. It also should not be so loose that it flaps around in the wind or creates sagging pockets where rainwater can collect.

Our outdoor furniture covers come with pull cord around the base, which helps you secure the cover properly. This is useful for reducing movement and helping the cover sit neatly around the item.

A made-to-measure cover is often the best choice when standard covers do not fit properly. If a cover is too big, it may sag and collect water. If it is too small, it may not give enough protection. Our bespoke garden furniture covers are made to suit the item you need to protect, whether that is a garden table, bench, fire pit, BBQ, pizza oven, hot tub, parasol or outdoor kitchen.

Should you leave cushions under garden furniture covers?

Although our garden furniture covers are made from waterproof and breathable polyester, we do not recommend leaving cushions under the cover for any length of time.

Breathable covers help reduce trapped moisture, but they cannot remove every risk. Condensation can still form under a cover, particularly when temperatures change or when damp air gets trapped. If cushions are left underneath for too long, they may become damp, marked or damaged.

The safest option is to store outdoor cushions in a dry place, such as a shed, garage or indoor storage box. A garden furniture cover can help protect the furniture frame, table, sofa base or chairs, but cushions are always better stored away when they are not being used.

Can breathable covers still get condensation underneath?

Yes, condensation can still happen under breathable garden furniture covers. This does not mean the cover has failed. Condensation is caused by moisture in the air and changes in temperature. It can happen with many outdoor covers, especially in the UK where the weather changes quickly.

This is why we advise customers not to leave soft furnishings, such as cushions, under the cover for long periods. It is also a good idea to make sure furniture is as dry as possible before covering it.

A waterproof and breathable cover gives strong protection from rain and dirt while allowing some air movement, but good use and care still matter.

What types of garden furniture can be covered?

We make a wide range of outdoor covers for different garden items. This includes garden furniture covers, outdoor table covers, patio set covers, outdoor sofa and sofa set covers, corner sofa covers, garden swing covers, chair covers, bench covers and sunbed covers.

We also make covers for BBQs, pizza ovens, fire pits, chimeneas, hot tubs, parasols, sand pits, outdoor kitchens, gazebos and pergola side panels.

If you cannot find the size or shape you need, we can make a made-to-measure cover. This is ideal for unusual furniture, large patio sets or items that do not suit standard shop-bought covers.
